FABIANO AMBU

Illustrator • Comic Artist • Editor • Curator

Every image tells a story.

I am Fabiano Ambu, an Italian illustrator and comic artist based in Milan. For more than twenty-five years, I have worked with images as a form of storytelling — across comics, illustration, publishing, exhibitions and visual projects.

My work moves between sequential storytelling and illustration, combining drawing, composition and character acting with a strong interest in atmosphere and visual identity. Whether I am working on a comic page, a cover or an original project, I approach the image as part of a narrative: it should not simply represent something, but suggest what happened before and what might happen next.

Over the years I have worked with publishers including Star Comics and BeccoGiallo, contributed to established Italian comic series such as Dampyr, Dragonero and Zagor, and created illustrations and Artist Proofs for Upper Deck. My work has also extended beyond publishing, with illustrations and visual contributions for television productions including RAI's Domenica In and Servizio Pubblico.

Alongside commissioned work, I have always developed creator-owned projects and original visual worlds. Ambu Universe, Pop – Story of a Sailor, It From Space, Josif 1957 and other projects grew from this need to explore characters and stories beyond the boundaries of a single assignment.

This independent approach also led me to develop It Comics, where my work expanded from drawing into editing, project development and cultural initiatives. Together with Rosa Puglisi / Vorticerosa, I have worked on publishing projects, exhibitions and experiments connecting comics with new forms of communication — from Corona(Vs)Comics and ComiCREW to HC — Human Creativity.

My relationship with images also extends into exhibitions and curatorial work, exploring the connections between comics, illustration, cinema and visual culture. These experiences have allowed me to approach drawing not only as an author, but also as someone interested in how images are selected, contextualised and presented to an audience.

After more than two decades of working with comics and illustration, what continues to interest me is still the same thing that brought me to drawing in the first place:

creating images that tell stories — and that remain with the viewer after the story has ended.
